Prices for wood packaging continue to fall in Germany

On the one hand, a decline in export revenues, and on the other hand an increasing oversupply of raw materials. As a result, the HPE price index values for wood assortments for the production of pallets and packaging in Germany continued to decline in the second quarter of 2019. The figures are now back to the level of the second half of 2017.

Solid wood for pallets

Solid wood for pallets rose the most in 2017 and is now the strongest. Compared to the first quarter of 2019, the index fell by 4.2%, even by 8% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Nevertheless, the index is still well above the level of the years before 2017, when the price level was relatively stable.

Solid wood for wooden packaging

Solid wood for wooden packaging fell by 3% compared to the first quarter of 2019, and compared to the second quarter of 2018 by 4.3%. 

Plywood for packaging

The prices for plywood for packaging have also declined. Compared with the first quarter, the index fell by 3.6%. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, by 7.4%. As with solid wood for pallets, this index is still above the average level of previous years.

OSB for packaging

OSB for packaging, which is already trading at a very low level, is now moving downwards again after a two-year price rally. The index fell 4% from the first quarter of 2019 and 4.8% from the second quarter of 2018. From the beginning of 2017 to the end of 2018, the value had increased by 35%.
