In 2018, the construction of a total of around 347,300 apartments was approved in Germany. As reported by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), there were 0.2% or 800 building permits less than in the previous year. The permits were valid for new buildings as well as for construction measures on existing buildings.

In 2018, around 302,800 apartments were approved for newly constructed residential buildings. This was 0.7% or 2 100 apartments more than in the previous year. This increase is solely due to the increase in building permits for multi-family dwellings (+ 4.7%). In contrast, the number of building permits for detached houses has fallen by 1.0% and for two-family houses by 6.5%.

For newly constructed non-residential buildings, which were approved in 2018, the constructed area increased by 4.0% to 225.7 million cubic meters from the previous year.
