Just as Germany, Italy is faced with increasing softwood lumber prices. Reduced pricing pressure from Sweden leads to a relaxation for all European lumber markets. Lumber stocks in Central European sawmills sank during past weeks. The difficult situation with log procurement prevents sawmills from increasing production.
Assortments like glulam lamellas or rough boards face a higher price increase than others, in the 10-20 €/m3 range. Packaging products’ prices are strongly dependent on the stocks of individual assortments. Therefore boards with dimensions of 23x100 mm were already in short supply mid-May, while for 17x75 mm the stocks could last until mid-June.

Construction timber assortments remain under pressure. From the 1st of July a new construction code with a stronger focus on earthquake security will take effect in Italy. However, Italian experts prefer to wait and see the results that the new construction regulation will have in practice. Wood will play a major role in the reconstruction in seismic zones. The first permanent emergency shelters are currently being built. Energy performance certificates for buildings should now be introduced for all apartments and not just for new buildings. This could help stimulate the renovation market.
