Not even 366,000 m³ of round timber have been imported in Latvia in the first half of 2008. Based on a sheet published by the Ministry of Agriculture earlier this month, the imports fell down 62.6% compared to the respective period last year. For imported coniferous sawlogs the drop in demand even was 88,1%. The total value of the imported round timber was LVL 19.76 million, that means a 56.7% decrease on last year.
Up to July 2008 roundwood imports (coniferous) from Russia to Latvia were nearly neglectable. The total volume amounted to 32,800 m³, which is 94,1% less compared to 557,800 m³ in the first half of 2007. In the ranking of the most important countries of delivery Russia fell behind Belarus.
This situation on the roundwood side is reflected in the numbers reported for the sawnwood exports from Latvia. The exported volume in this section declined by 27,8% to a total of 822,3 m³. The value even dropped by 35,9% to a total of LVL 110,56 million.
