Due to strong shipments to Egypt, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Norway, Germany's pine planed lumber exports are clearly ranging above the previous year. In January-September 2014, they were +7% higher than in 2013, despite the fact that strong reductions were registered in exports to South Korea, Australia and especially the United States. If in 2013, the U.S. was Germany's main export partner, in the analysed period ranks only eight. Volumes delivered to the US are only a quarter of the ones delivered in 2013.
Also the Chinese demand for German pine planed lumber seems to be slowing down. The much anticipated decline of the Chinese construction market seems to have become a real problem for German sawyers. Volumes delivered in September 2014 are more than four times lower than September 2013, and as many analysists point out, this trend is set to continue in the upcoming period.
Markets in Europe and North Africa are now more attractive for the German sawmills. Volume delivered to the Netherlands in Jan.September 2014 is +33% higher over the same period last year. Moreover, a much stronger demand can be noticed from the United Kingdom, which has continued thorughout the whole year: by September, German exports are 7 times higher than in 2013. Above all, Egypt is the winner in January-September 2014: Germany shipped 20,000 cubic meters more pine planed to the North African country as compared to January-September 2013.
The following average prices for the most important customer countries can be deduced from the January-October figures: Netherlands € 203/m³ (ø I-IX/2014: € 195/m³), South Korea € 221/m³ (ø I-IX/2014: 214), China € 195 €/m³ (ø I-IX/2014: 184) and Egypt € 192/m³ (ø I-IX/2014: 134).
